Great innovators and strategists use a variety of frameworks to help them and their teams generate user insights, create winning ideas and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
Here are 7 frameworks I use:
The 5 Why’s
↳ Begin by capturing what the problem is that you’re facing
↳ Ask why 5 times and get to the root cause of the problem
The Nested Strategy
↳ Use this to get clarity on your strategy
↳ Fill out the template to help you focus on customer and business needs and how you’re addressing them
Empathy Map
↳ Use the template at the beginning of a design process to improve understanding of your audience
↳ The mapping process helps teams synthesise research and reveal deeper insights about users
Test Cards
↳ Use these to get clarity on what your hypothesis is and what you’re testing
↳They help you focus on next steps and insights when testing
Crazy 8s
↳ When ideating, generating a high quantity of ideas is helpful before narrowing down on the highest quality ones
↳ After using this technique you can ask participants to focus on one idea to build out
Customer Profile
↳ This is a great tool to use to get clarity on what user needs are
↳ Focus on customer jobs, pains and gains so your ideation is focused on customer needs
Design thinking
↳ This is more of a mindset and approach than a framework per se
↳ Use it as a guide in developing new products and creating a user-centred approach
Remember:
Innovation is a capability and skill that can be learned. Experiment with these frameworks and adapt them so they work for you.
